Chapter 3: Whatever You Do! Don't!
Catherine sat in the break room watching quietly as Gil Grissom gave the other three CSI's their nightly assignments. She didn't know exactly when she'd fallen in love with the supervisor of the Graveshift, but she had, though she'd denied it to herself for long enough.
Deep in Denialville
Tryin' to fight the way I feel
I go jello when you smile
I start blushin' - my head rushin'
He was very different from the type of guy she would normally have hooked up with and that was certainly a blessing. All the others had been no hopers and losers and she'd always ended up supporting them for the length of the miserable relationship. Her one and only husband so far, Eddie Willows, had been no exception.
"Catherine?"
She was startled to realise that Grissom was speaking to her, and she had been too busy admiring him to even hear what he'd said. Blushing she tried to recover quickly. "Yeah, Gil, what you got planned for me tonight?"
Grissom gave her his pouted lip smile and she felt as though her insides were about to melt. How did he do that? Was it practice or just his nice guy attitude showing through that made it so easy?
If you stand to close to me
I might melt down from the heat
If ya' look my way one more time
I'm gonna go out of my mind
Whatever you do...
"Homicide," he answered her, "two bodies, ready?" When she nodded that she was, he gestured for her to precede him and escorted her out of the room. "I'll get my keys and meet you at the car," he told her.
You stop me in my tracks
My heart pumpin to the max
I'm such a sucker for your eyes
They permanently paralyse
Whatever you do...
She allowed her hand to brush almost caressingly over his where he held the door. She thought she heard a strangled gasp but when she looked up at him he just smiled again his eyes twinkling. 'Oh God,' she thought, her heartbeat increasing rapidly, 'I could just drown in those eyes' Then gave her head a brief shake as if resettling her hair. 'Down girl, you've got to work closely with him tonight don't give it away!'
You got my heart under attack
You send shivers down my back
D'ya have to walk the way you do?
I get weak just watchin' you
Grissom watched Catherine walk down the corridor to the front door and then the parking lot. He'd almost given himself away there. He was sure Catherine had heard him gasp when her hand hit his. He'd had a hard time preventing her from seeing the shiver she created in him. He couldn't help staring at the sway of her hips when she walked. Did she have any idea what she did to him? God, he hoped not.
He'd always gotten on really well with Catherine from their very first meeting and it hadn't taken him long to realise just what she meant to him, but that was the sort of things day dreams were made of. He could never tell her he loved her. Why would a woman like that ever want to be with a man like him? He knew from her track record he definitely wasn't her type. Too quiet and bookish for the fiery strawberry blonde. She lived for challenge and danger, and he was neither.
It was going to be a really long night. Being with her and not being able, or was it willing, to say anything. He couldn't risk their friendship he just wasn't willing to lose the part she played in his life already. If that had to be enough, then so be it.
Don't even think about it!
Don't go and get me started!
Don't you dare drive me crazy!
Don't do that to me baby!
Warrick Brown stood at the other end of the corridor waiting for Nick Stokes and Sara Sidle. He shook his head as he watched the by play between Catherine and Grissom. Man they made a right pair. When would one of them finally make a move? He didn't understand how he could see how much they each loved one another, yet the main players were totally blind to it. Love is blind was a true concept where his two friends were concerned.
He'd thought about intervening, but lately had the suspicion that it was only a matter of time before one broke down and told the other. From tonight's example he figured that would be sooner rather than later. He may as well just see how things panned out and give them a little helping hand if and when he could.
"Coming, Warrick?" Nick yelled.
"Right there," he answered and headed off to catch up with the other two.
